Country Fair - two days of town festivity

Wollombi Tavern

To Lavender Ridge Members who pass through Wollombi on their way up to the Hunter, but haven't had the chance to explore the town yet, you'd know it by the Tavern. Its the one that you pass by on the left, timber cottage balcony one, the one that always packed, even in the oddest hours of commuting due to its popularity as a pit stop for bikies.

When I travel up to the Hunter from Sydney, The Wollombi Tavern marks my entry into Wollombi, which marks my entry into the 'nearly there' leg of my trip. That being so, its a rare occasion that I will stop of at the 'Tav' unless Im in dire need of the facilities or if its a particularly beautiful day and I can get a spot sitting in the sun with my drink as I pick off the shiny bikes that I would, and wouldn't have in my motorbike fantasy.

In any case the value of Wollombi extends beyond the Tav as a toilet stop as you will be able to appreciate today. With its convict history (Great North Road), beautiful old churches, cafes and restaurants the fair is the perfect opportunity to get a feel for the historic side of the Hunter as well as enjoying some local produce and country entertainment.

The Wollombi Country Fair will run for two days - 7 & 8 November 2009.

“Celebrating the very best of local food, wine, produce and entertainment; the town will showcase the diversity of Wollombi Valley! Enjoy all the above as we gather in the village with stalls, music & street theatre both days”

Sat 7 Nov 10 am - late

Sun 8 Nov 10am - 4 pm

From the features schedule it seems like Saturday is very much the girls day, and Sunday the boys. Saturday will feature the Wollombi Wood Chop, where as the organisers inform us, ‘the best of Australia’s Men compete for Dr. Jurd’s Award!". Unmissable.

Sunday will be host to Wollombi Museum Open Day, “an interesting display of antique tractors, stationary engines and agricultural machinery, conducted by the Hunter Vallley Vintage Farm Machinery Club”....and after your finished, the girls will meet you across the road at the Tav.
